Exhibition Title: Splendor and Sanctity: A Special Exhibition of Cultural Relics from the Famen Temple and the High Tang Dynasty

Exhibition Period: June 12, 2025 – October 11, 2025

Exhibition Venue: Luoyang Museum

Exhibition Overview:
In 1987, when archaeologists carefully cleared away the layers of earth from the underground crypt of Famen Temple, the resplendent glory of the High Tang civilization was unveiled once again. Standing as a sacred site along the Buddhist route of the Silk Road, Famen Temple enshrined a true relic of the Buddha's remains, which profoundly influenced the spiritual pulse of the Tang Dynasty. Through the devout patronage of Empress Wu Zetian, the temple became a testament to the extraordinary interplay between imperial power and faith.

Co-curated by Luoyang Museum and Famen Temple Museum, this exhibition is a featured project under the 2025 "Reading China through Museums" theme. It showcases over a hundred precious artifacts from nine cultural and museum institutions across China. Centered on the theme of "Splendor and Sanctity," the exhibition is divided into three sections: "Towering Pagoda: Tracing the History of Famen Temple," "Golden Wheel and Jade Seal: Royal Patronage of the Buddha's Relic," and "The Glory of an Era: The Legacy of Craftsmanship and Aesthetics."

Through a selection of exquisite artifacts, visitors are invited into the heart of Tang civilization, where Buddhist devotion, imperial grandeur, and artistic brilliance converge. Gleaming gold and silverware, celadon-glazed ceramics of jade-like hues, glassware reflecting foreign influences, and vibrant Tang tri-color pottery—these objects embody not only the wisdom of the Buddha but also the warmth of human craftsmanship; not only the authority of the throne but also the dedication of artisans. They stand as the pinnacle of High Tang artistry and a radiant testament to the cultural confidence of the Chinese nation.
