Exhibition Title: Patterns Give Rise to All Things: An Exhibition on the Ornamentation of Ancient Chinese Bronzes
Exhibition Period: July 5, 2025 – October 8, 2025
Exhibition Venue: Luoyang Sui-Tang Grand Canal Cultural Museum
Exhibition Overview:
This exhibition takes "ornamentation" as its central narrative thread, focusing on the artistic characteristics and cultural significance of the decorative patterns themselves. It is divided into four sections: "Form and Function," "Pattern and Evolution," "Inscription and Expression," and "Transformation and Continuity." Together, these units systematically present the complete evolutionary trajectory of bronze ornamentation, tracing its shift from divine symbolism to humanistic expression.
The exhibition brings together precious cultural relics unearthed from key archaeological sites, including hoards at Zhuangbai Village and Yuntang Village in Fufeng County, Baoji; cemeteries at Shigushan and Xigaoquan; the Qianzhangda site in Tengzhou; the Tianxingguan cemetery in Jingzhou; and Luoshan County in Xinyang. The exhibits encompass a wide range of vessel types such as wine vessels, food containers, musical instruments, weaponry, and chariot fittings, as well as classic decorative motifs including animal masks (taotie), dragon patterns, bird patterns, and geometric designs. The exhibition offers a comprehensive showcase of the visual aesthetics and historical significance of ornamentation in ancient Chinese bronze culture.
